Carpal Tunnel

What Is Carpal Tunnel?

The carpal tunnel is a pathway that runs through the wrist into the hand. This is a very narrow passageway. It runs along the palm side of the wrist. This pathway is where the nerves run to the hand. Nerves are the communication pathways throughout the body. This is where your brain sends the message to your hand and fingers to move. For most people, there's no pain when moving the wrist. However, for some, this pathway isn't as easily accessible. When this happens, carpal tunnel syndrome can develop.

What Is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Carpal tunnel syndrome describes a condition in which numbness or tingling occurs in this area. This means the nerves are no longer able to move messages through properly. There are many factors that can cause carpal tunnel syndrome to occur. Most commonly, it is the result of pressure on the wrist's median nerve. This is the specific nerve that runs from the hand into the carpal tunnel pathway. This nerve is important – it helps to provide instructions to your palm side of your hand as well as your thumb and fingers. It also provides messages from the brain to the muscles located at the base of the thumb.

When this nerve is squeezed or damaged, it causes the pain you feel. This can happen when the space in the carpal tunnel becomes too small or narrows so much so that the nerves are impacted.

Common symptoms of this condition include:

  • Tingling and numbness in the fingers or the hand in general.
  • A sensation that seems to travel up the wrist to the arm.
  • Weakness in the arm or hand is also common. This may cause a person to drop objects.

What Is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Treatment?

It's important to seek out treatment as soon as possible as this can minimize the type of care you need. You may not need surgery to treat this condition. Rather, chiropractic care can often help. Our goal is to open up that pathway and to properly align the joints in the wrist to ensure the nerve messages can travel properly, without any delay. This reduces your pain. Each of our patients will need a customized treatment plan that meets their needs.

Our goal is to always provide the least invasive and most holistic treatment option available. We can do this through chiropractic services including adjustments. Before you have surgery or more invasive treatments, come in to see our team first.
